I saw that you, my baby, are also a sacred bundle. For example, “Medicines of cedar and sage are for you to keep your spirit strong.” I Sang You Down From the Stars culminates in the baby’s birth and introduction to their community: “You brought them so much love and joy. She explains both how these items relate to her-“With each stitch, I whispered a prayer for you and thought about wrapping you up warm and safe, just like you are now in my belly”-and how they will help the baby. The story follows the mother’s description of the items she collects for the baby’s “bundle” (including a feather she finds and a quilt she sews). The narration is comprised of a mother (the narrator) addressing her newly born baby in second person point of view to explain how she prepared for their arrival. In particular, it’s an ideal gift for new parents and an effective tool for Indigenizing curriculum in preschool, Kindergarten, and Grade 1. As an instant timeless classic, I Sang You Down From the Stars will appeal to all ages. Lapping all others right out the gates, this picture book written by Tasha Spillett-Sumner and illustrated by Michaela Goade will make every child who hears it feel special, while simultaneously imparting a prevalent Indigenous worldview. I Sang You Down From the Stars is, quite simply, the best book available in the “Welcome Baby” category.

While Bee and Levi both have successful careers in their respective fields and are paired together on an equal playing field, the characters in “The Love Hypothesis” had a more conflicting relationship as teacher and student. At first glance, the two stories are similar - intelligent but struggling scientists, tall love interests that “hate” their heroine and plenty of Star Wars references - but their differences surpass a simple change in trope. Given the success of Hazelwood’s debut “The Love Hypothesis,” it’s no surprise that this new “ STEM-inist romcom” was one of the more anticipated romance books of 2022. But worst of all, her co-leader on the project is Levi Ward, her hot but sworn enemy from grad school … or so she thinks. She doesn’t have the right credentials to get into her building. Life in academia is unpredictable (particularly when it comes to job security), so Bee needs everything to go well, but right away she has her work cut out for her. “Love on the Brain” follows Bee Königswasser, a neuroscientist who has just been offered a dream career opportunity: working for NASA on a special mission. You might cry or scream into your pillow, or in the case of Ali Hazelwood’s newest release “Love on the Brain,” you might walk away feeling smarter after reading. The best kinds of romance novels will do more than give you butterflies in your stomach. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Daredevil 158I read the first 25 issues than jumped to issue 138. It was very much a villain of the month book. Daredevil was a globe-trotting swashbuckler basically. It wasn’t always that way though! I tried to read from issue one and just couldn’t do it. The art is also top-notch!! Liking the current run so much caused my interest in what has become one of the most respected and stable runs of any Marvel character. Chip Zdarsky has crafted an intriguing story, with many threads. If you aren’t reading it, I HIGHLY recommend it. Art: Frank Miller, Joe Rosen, Klaus Janson, George Roussos The old hymn evoked it for more than a century before it was picked up as a song of protest and liberation by the civil rights movement. “Gilead” is a Biblical place, but it’s called up in American culture over and over. There are many versions of the song, which has morphed through centuries of American history, but the version in our hymnal had this refrain: Whenever he filled in for a service, he requested that we sing the same hymn - “There is a Balm in Gilead,” the traditional African American spiritual. One frequent visitor was a kindly British man who had been the church’s pastor years ago and retained an “emeritus” title. If all the church’s ministers were out of town, we’d have a visiting preacher. Our cavernous, old-fashioned wooden sanctuary didn’t have air conditioning. The hard, uncushioned pews got sticky in the heat, five decades or so of dust and dirt and sweat turning a little tacky no matter how often they were cleaned. When the midsummer air gets so thick that it glows pink in the sunset hours, and it’s too hazy to do much more than sit and listen to the crickets and passing traffic, I am transported to Sunday evening church in the summertime, in my hometown in New York’s Hudson Valley. Rather than view his ideas through a socialist lens, the author suggests that it is important to measure the validity of socialist thought and practice in the Indian context, through his critique of the social totality. In the context of several interlocutors and historical moments, with sparklingly clear prose, she shows how socialism was a 'spectral presence' in his thought as he worked to create forms of epistemic, ontological and socio-political rupture with the order of caste and untouchability." -Smriti Srinivas, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Davis, USA This book offers a reading of Bhimrao Ambedkar's engagement with the idea and practice of socialism in India by linking it to his lifelong political and philosophical concerns: the annihilation of the caste system, untouchability and the moral and philosophical systems that justify either. Geetha pursues a recursive method as she maps the coordinates of Ambedkar's vision of time and the ethical across his theorization of caste, colonial rule, labor, social reproduction and religion. Namina Forna’s The Gilded Ones introduced us to a richly imagined West African-inspired fantasy world, one in which women are sadly still too often the victims of oppression and violence, depending on whether their blood runs pure (red) or tainted (gold) during a so-called “Ritual of Purity”.ĭeka yearns to belong but is cast out of her village after her blood runs gold during her test, where she discovers that she is a part of a race of warrior women known as alaki. |
